I started practicing bankruptcy law in 1977, when the law was the Bankruptcy Act of 1898. The modern Bankruptcy Code came into effect the very next year, and has been changed many times in the past 30 years. But the law is there to protect debtors, like you and like me, because the framers of the American Constitution knew, way back in 1789, just how awful bill collectors could be.
